Research Interests:
My research is focused on organic-inorganic hybrid solid state materials. It is of interdisciplinary nature comprising synthetic inorganic, organic, and solid state chemistry. Materials' properties characterization and optimization also involves physical chemistry, materials science, and materials engineering. The projects are therefore directed to students interested to these fields crossing scientific borderlines. I believe that materials chemistry provides an excellent opportunity to integrate fundamental and application-oriented science, which we want to exploit.
I am particularly interested in hierarchically ordered materials with a well-defined structure at multiple length scales ranging from the nanometer, micrometer to the millimeter level. The development of "bottom-up" approaches to create complexity in the material by simplicity in synthesis using self-assembly techniques plays a central role. The goal is to design and discover useful physical or chemical properties deriving from the order at the different hierarchy levels, which work synergistically together. Potential technological uses include catalysis, sensing, separation, gas storage, chemical delivery, and microelectronics.
